A Call for Prayer and Compassionate Action
Dear Beloved People of the Ohio Episcopal Area,
Severe flooding across Central Ohio has caused widespread damage and disruption, displacing families and threatening homes and livelihoods. Our hearts are with all who have been affected.
I invite every congregation across East and West Ohio to respond with prayer and compassionate action. Please pray for those in danger, for first responders, and for all providing shelter, food, medical care, and assistance.
The work of recovery will require sustained cooperation. I encourage our churches to care for their neighbors, remain connected with district and conference leaders, and participate in coordinated relief efforts as opportunities arise.
No congregation or community should face this crisis alone. Through our prayers, generosity, service, and faithful partnership, may we embody Christ’s healing presence.
God of mercy and refuge, protect those in danger, comfort those who have suffered loss, and strengthen all who serve. Gather us as one body so that, through our loving action, hope may rise and communities may be restored. In Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
Bishop Hee-Soo Jung

Flood Response Shows We’re Stronger Together
Over the last several weeks, severe storms and torrential rains have caused multiple rounds of flooding across the southern and central portions of Ohio. Perry County in southeast Ohio was hit hardest, with the communities of Crooksville and Roseville bearing the worst of the damage. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated from flooded homes, and emergency shelters remain open even now. Additional heavy rains in the following days led to more flooding in Perry County, as well as in Cincinnati, Columbus, and the surrounding counties. Other areas of the state, including Champaign, Clark, Madison, and Franklin counties, experienced tornadoes that led to power outages and downed trees.
In this same time, the Disaster Response Ministries of both the East and West Ohio Conferences have been working together to care for churches and communities. Our Conference Disaster Response Coordinators are staying updated on how government and voluntary organizations are responding. District administrators are connecting with local churches around flood damage, donation collections, and volunteers who are willing to help out when the time comes. Early Response Team training is being organized so that volunteers can be properly prepared to complete muck-outs and remove debris. Flood buckets are being delivered to homeowners who need cleaning supplies. A joint East-West Ohio team is being formed to respond once the flood waters have receded. And UMCOR has awarded the West Ohio Conference a $10,000 Solidarity Grant to support the recovery efforts.
If you or your congregation would like to get involved in responding to these events, please DO NOT SELF-DEPLOY. Going to these communities at this moment in time will only serve to burden an already-overwhelmed system. Instead, consider doing one or more of the following:
• PRAY – Pray for disaster survivors as well as first responders, volunteers, community members, and local churches.
• GIVE – Give to West Ohio Disaster Response ministries online or by check. Donations will go to help survivors of disasters or local churches affected by the flooding.
• Online: West Ohio Disaster Response | West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church
• By Check: Make check out to West Ohio Conference, 32 Wesley Blvd, Worthington, OH 43085 with ‘WO Disaster Response’ in the Memo line.
• MAKE – Make flood buckets or hygiene kits for disaster survivors to assist in their recovery.
• Flood bucket & Hygiene kit instructions: Relief Supplies | Global Ministries
• Email mgrace@wocumc.org to learn where supplies can be dropped off.
• LEARN – Take an Early Response Team class to learn how you can respond after a disaster, including how to safely muck-out flooded basements.
• ERT Class & Recertification, September 16 at New Concord UMC
• ERT Class & Recertification, October 10 at North Broadway UMC, Columbus
• JOIN – A joint East-West Ohio team is being formed to volunteer in the Perry County area the week of September 28.
• Email mgrace@wocumc.org for more information.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity! You can make a difference in the lives of disaster survivors right here in our own state.
As one Ohio, we are truly stronger together!
Bishop Hee-Soo Jung
