ROCKPORT’S SECOND OF THREE 200TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

IS A WEEK FROM SUNDAY!
On August 14th we will have worship in our beautiful outdoor chapel with special music and former minister, Rev. Dr. David Wilcox, giving the message.  Following worship, we will be heading to Wesley Hall for a breakfast with pancakes, eggs and sausages. (Please note we will have vegan and low sugar options) At around 11:45am we will begin tours across the street at our original church, – now called The Recovery Church.  Be sure to RSVP on the bulletin board, so we can plan for food accordingly.  Also, don’t forget our third and final 200th celebration on September 18th.  Please be sure to RSVP as we are having a catered meal.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!
Greetings in Christ!
I want to write a few lines of Congratulations to all of our Graduates! So many of us, whether in high school and under, or college and elsewhere in the learning world, still faced a lot of challenges this past school year with the pandemic. Education has been quite challenging the past several years!
It has been difficult for those of us here at Rockport to miss a lot of milestones that we would otherwise be able to observe and take part in with you! We have prayed for you on the sidelines! WE ARE SO very proud of all that has been accomplished and cannot wait to see you soar above this crazy time and continue your journey. WE WILL ALWAYS be here for you - no matter where you go in the world - and always REMEMBER that GOD is with you, every single step of the way.
WE LOVE YOU GRADUATES! (TO INFINITY AND BEYOND! )
Kira Cimino Holchin, and the entire Rockport UMC Family

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.  ~  Colossians 2:6-7

ROCKPORT’S COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT:

We faced a daunting task of fixing up a house identified by the Fairview Park Senior Center as needing work.  Holly’s house, on W. 220th street, required a lot of work.  We replaced the rail around the front porch, which was in poor shape, the front step, which had sunk several inches into the ground, and the cedar siding on the south side of the house, which was mostly warped. Additionally, we removed moss and debris from the roof, trimmed the trees, and cleaned the gutters.  We scraped peeling paint and repainted.  We repaired a rotted corner of the siding.

We began this task on June 8 and worked on Wednesday’s until completion on August 3rd.  We averaged 5 volunteers a week, generally working about four hours each time. Our volunteers included Dennis Kay, Mike Wilkenson, Andrew Allen, Don Kraps, Nick Berardi, and myself.  We donated 160 hours of our time in an effort to reflect Christ in our community.  Holly is very grateful for our efforts.

One additional task by one of our volunteers was to replace the sewer lines to her house, as her plumbing would not drain.  Nick Berardi donated his time and his company’s resources (namely Steve, a trench digger and associated equipment) to snake out the line, replace it, and rework her plumbing.  Nick’s generosity was remarkable.

The other expenses incurred for siding, paint, and construction materials, was funded through Rockport’s spaghetti dinner funds.  Those that worked the recent dinners helped make this possible.

Our mission is to assist neighbors who may have outlived their life savings yet remain in a house with little means to properly maintain it.  Perhaps they face tough choices in order to make certain they can feed themselves and pay their bills.   I believe that we helped make a substantial difference in Holly’s life.

We also plan to assist Janice, who lives on W. 210th street, also in Fairview Park, in September.  We plan to replace her steps.  If you’d like to help, join our team.

 Sincerely,  Dave Plachta

PRAY AND BIKE OR WALK OR RELAX OPPORTUNITY!
Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m.  Praying and Biking or Walking or Sitting to Relax  are two great activities!  Please join us to do both!  Our prayer focus is the scripture from Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  We will be praying for God's Will to be done for the next 200 years of Rockport Church! And then we can bike, or walk, or sit and relax! All are welcome!

BOOK CLUB:   Please join us on Tuesday, Aug. 30th at 7:30pm at Dianne Hall’s house for fellowship and discussion.  Bring a dessert or appetizer to share.  Marie Benedict’s work of historical fiction, The Only Woman in the Room, tells the life story of Hedy Lamarr, a famed actress of the 1930s and 1940s. The 2019 novel rewrites Lamarr’s legacy by focusing on her path towards inventing a frequency-hopping radio technology that anticipates wi-fi. Benedict uses the political machinations of WWII and Hedy’s experiences to explore performativity, guilt, and sexism. Hope to see you all on Aug. 30th for food, fellowship and discussion!

COFFEE HOUR:
Please sign-up on the bulletin board to host coffee hour.  Fellowship is so important to the life of the church.  And of course, it wouldn’t be a Methodist event without food!  Nothing fancy, just a few goodies will be needed to host and Rockport will provide the coffee and water.
