Jesus is the Light
All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
John 1:3-5 NRSV
(John the Baptist) himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
When we speak fondly of someone saying, “You light up my life”, or “You are the light of my life”, we are expressing our love and appreciation for the individual. There is a certain joy found in the presence of the person. Those who are the light of our lives usually make life worth living.
Occasionally, though, we find ourselves disappointed by those whom we have claimed as the light of our lives. It is soon discovered they are not the perfect person we once depended on to bring us joy and happiness. But then where do we find the light that brings the kind of joy that remains even in dark times?
Jesus is The Light…the light of the world…the light that overcomes darkness. He is the light that will never forget a promise, never leave you, and never let you walk alone. Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 NRSV Life is found in the Light.
One phrase you will hear often at Rockport Church is, “You never have to walk alone.” As committed followers of Jesus, we take seriously the call to carry the light of Jesus into a dark world. May you discover Jesus as the light of your life! Through Jesus, life is definitely worth living!
