Jesus is a Friend

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other.

John 15:12-17 NLT

In the world of social networking…more specifically, Facebook for example, “friends” are easy to come by...or are they?  Jesus defines "friend" as someone who is willing to lay down their life for you…WOW!  Now that is something to ponder!

Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.  Proverbs 18:24

There is nothing wrong with having acquaintances, but true friendship is what Jesus demonstrates and offers.  It is a relationship that never wavers or is based on convenience or self gain.  It’s an “all in” kind of relationship based on Jesus’ love.

Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.  Proverbs 27:6

One of the greatest things about true Biblical friendship is knowing that when a friend says something to you about an area in which you need to grow, you know their intent is from love. If they didn't love you and value you, they wouldn't risk telling you something you didn't want to hear!

Jesus is a friend.  He shares everything he knows from God with us.  He loves and values each of us so much he is willing to risk everything to help us grow and learn.  Jesus calls us friends when we share this kind of love with others.

At Rockport Church we believe that sharing the love our friend Jesus commanded, the world can be transformed!
