Jesus is Fullfiller of the Law

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Matthew 5:17-18

At first sight, this is a puzzling thing for Jesus to say.  Didn’t he come to introduce a new way of being friends with God- a new way of living that requires faith, and not obedience to the rules?  Yes, he did.

But the rules were and still are full of meaning.  They were based on the character and purposes of God, which never change.

Jesus fulfils “the Law and the Prophets” (the Old Testament, or Jewish Bible) by giving full meaning to them.  Some rules had to do with animal sacrifices to cleanse sin away - Jesus fulfilled those rules by his own sacrificial death on the cross, which meant all further sacrifices are unnecessary.  Rules about which foods could be eaten had to do with Israel being distinct from other nations, but it was always God’s plan to bring those nations back into His people.  Jesus achieves that, too, so those rules are no longer necessary.

But there were other rules about how we live which are also based on God’s character; faithful, just and loving.  God wants us to be like this, too.  Rockport Church nurtures individuals in their walk with God to discover for themselves God's character in their individual lives.  We do best to learn through studies, worship and time spent in service, to grow together in living our lives based on God's character.
