Jesus...A Fashion Model
(based on Colossians 3:1-12 The Message)
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
Colossians 3:12-14 NLT
Fashions come and go. As they change, we toss out the old and bring in the new. For most, it is important to wear what is in fashion…at least within the same decade. If we were to consistently walk around with designer clothing from the 20’s, we would quickly see it doesn’t work too well.
It is easy to make assumptions about others based on their appearance; for instance, seeing a gentleman with an overgrown beard and tattered clothes sitting on a park bench, one may label him homeless and in need of help. We have a choice, toss him some money based on our assumption, or sit down and invite conversation to really see the person for who they are and what they really need.
Those who call themeselves Christian must consciously consider how they present themselves in order to convey message of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Paul teaches us that when we accept Jesus, our earthly desires and ways are dead. We put on a new life in Christ…a new wardrobe…a fashion Design that never goes out of style with God’s label on it.
Jesus modeled that wardrobe for us…compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, and discipline, full of forgiveness and most importantly, love. (vs.12-14)
When we wear the wardrobe Jesus modeled, we no longer make assumptions. We no longer put an earthly label on others. Instead, we begin to see people through the eyes of grace and love just as we are seen.
May you allow the Fashion Designer to dress you each day.
